Supporting healthier + stronger relationships

You are not alone

For parents struggling to connect with their child or understand the underlying causes of an emotional disturbance, Laurel Life’s Family Based Mental Health Services (FBMHS) can provide a much-needed lifeline.

FBMHS utilizes a range of therapeutic interventions to strengthen and maintain families. It is designed to reduce psychiatric hospitalizations and other out-of-home placements. By improving coping skills and empowering family members with strategies to care for the child at home, FBMHS helps families to stay together and function more effectively.

A non-traditional holistic approach

With FBMHS, family members who may be unable or unwilling to participate in traditional outpatient programs can access mental health treatment. All services are community-based and delivered primarily in the home environment at a time that is most convenient for the individual child, siblings, parents, other caregivers and natural supports.

In addition to brief crisis stabilization, FBMHS include intensive treatment, education, and skill building. All services are provided by a team of two clinicians with clinical oversight and last for up to 32 weeks based on the specific need.

During treatment, one of the key goals of FBMHS is to connect children and families with community agencies and other resources. By doing so, FBMHS help to create a comprehensive support system that families can rely on both during treatment and beyond. Laurel Life clinicians also develop an aftercare plan once treatment is complete that directs families to agencies and practitioners who will be able to provide continuing services and support.

Rapid response to family needs

Through a combination of individual and family therapy, crisis intervention, referrals to other community resources and ongoing training, FBMHS help families identify and build upon their strengths so they can maintain their role as the primary caregiver for the child.

FBMHS is funded by the Office of Mental Health, Department of Public Welfare and services are provided at no cost to the family. The program serves children between the ages of 3 and 21 that have a Medical Assistance (MA) card, are enrolled in Perform Care or Community Care, have a mental health diagnosis and are at risk for out-of-home placement. At least one adult parent must be willing to participate in the services.

Referrals can be made by parents, family and friends as well as psychiatrists, case managers, school members and other mental health providers via a prescription letter. Once a referral is made, every effort is made to respond quickly and efficiently. A determination of eligibility is required from a physician or licensed psychologist prior to the initiation of services.
